Mutual aid support meetings offer people in recovery an opportunity for shared hope and healing.
In Berks County, hundreds of mutual aid and self-help support meetings occur on a weekly basis. At the start of the pandemic in March 2020, in-person meetings were suddenly put on hold. Fortunately, technology was quickly implemented to help keep people connected through Zoom, teleconferencing and social medial platforms. People in recovery, who would otherwise have become isolated, have continued to give and receive support throughout the pandemic.
An article in our recent issue of The Response magazine looks at the value of mutual aid support meetings, and the methods used to keep them going while adhering to social distancing protocols.
"Through the support of mutual aid support groups, the gigantic step [to recovery] is possible with the help and support of peers," the article states.
