Tower Health to Close Reading Detox Center

Tower Health has announced plans to close the Reading Hospital Drug and Alcohol Center in August.

In a recent article in the Reading Eagle, Council on Chemical Abuse Executive Director Stan Papademetriou said the center is the only drug withdrawal-management program in the county accessible to a large portion of residents who are Medicaid-eligible. However, he stressed that he is confident that other programs can be found to meet the needs of local clients.

He is working with Dr. Edward B. Michalik, head of Berks County Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities, to find other providers to handle patients, according to the article.

The decision to close the facility is one of a number of cost-cutting measures implemented by Tower Health following revenue losses due to COVID-19.
